Under the guidance of Skopos Theory, the embodiment of the translation style has long been the centre of heated discussions on the translation of literary works. However, there is a lack of data to support the analysis, which cannot reflect the changes of translators’ translation style and translation strategies based on different purposes. Nowadays, translator’s style has been discussed again. Except for a few typical example sentences analyses, relevant studies are very scarce. In this study, we use text data mining to analyse the translation styles of translations of The Real Story of Ah-Q and Others Tales (translated by Yang Xianyi and Lan Shiling). In order to interpret the differences of the different translators driven by the cultural contexts of the target language and the purposes of the translations, we want to provide useful references to the translation and its cross-cultural dissemination. It is found that, based on different purposes and cultural contexts, Yang’s translation is more short-sentenced, simple and clear, and faithful to the original text, while Blue’s translation is more long-sentenced, vivid and flexible, and faithful to the ideas.
Autumn in Peiping is one of the significant representative works of Yu Dafu, a modern Chinese writer. This prose mainly depicts the scenery of the old capital during autumn, along with the portrayal of its inhabitants and daily trivial matters. The author effectively conveys his profound emotions for his hometown and his appreciation for life. In the process of translation, the translator must select appropriate translation methods based on the intended purpose, in order to accurately convey the meaning and style of the original text. This paper, from the perspective of Skopos Theory, analyzes the English translations by Mr. Zhang Peiji and Mr. Wang Jiaosheng based on the principles of skopos, coherence, and fidelity, aiming to explore the differences between the two translated texts.
