Burning behaviour of Phyllostachys pubescens aged 6 years with different heated surface were tested by cone calorimeter with the heat irradiance 50 kW·m-2.The results showed that the ignition time of bamboo wood was in order of outer culm>inner culm>middle culm when the tangential section was used as a heated surface.Meanwhile, with the radial section or cross section was used as a heated surface, the ignition time of bamboo wood was in order of outer culm>middle culm>inner culm. When the tangential section, the radial section and cross section of middle culm were used as heated surface, the longest ignition time was produced by the cross section. The total heat release of 600 s of bamboo wood was in order of outer culm>inner culm>middle culm. The pkHRR of outer culm and inner culm was at first peak, the time of the 2nd pkHRR of bamboo wood was delayed from inner culm to outer culm. When the cross section used as the heat surface, the width of the 2nd pkHRR increased. The carbonization time became shorter. There were two stronger process of smoke, one was before the igniting and another was after the charring finished. The weakest smoke appears in the charring and flameless combustion stage. The mass loss and the heat release indicated the same changing curves.
